This page is devoted to the Gibson L12 Premier Guitar we recently sold.
Gibson produced the L12 Archtop guitar for quite a few years. The top of an archtop is carved, like a violin, rather than pressed. The L12 was made from 1932- 1955, however, this guitar is not just an L12. This is an L12 Premier Model. The Premier model has a rounded cutaway. The L12-P was only produced for 2 years between 1947 and 1949. Although some were shipped in 1950 they were no longer in production by then. Because Gibson released no production numbers there is no reliable way to know exactly how many L12 Premier Archtop guitars were actually built.
Archtop guitars were designed to be played with big bands and they have a loud, rich, powerful sound. This guitar is no exception. The tone and projection are amazing.
Over the years this guitar has had some work. The pick guard bracket was originally made of a celluloid material and it has disintegrated. A new bracket was added by some previous owner and a new hole was drilled in the side to accommodate it. We have not repaired the extra hole in the guitar. Click here to bring that picture to the top.
The original machine heads have been replaced with Gold Gibson Kluson tuners which are as close to the original tuners as possible. There were no tuners on the guitar when we acquired it. The headstock was not modified to make the new tuners fit. Click here to bring the tuners to the top.
A 6-inch crack had developed on the back lower bout. The crack is closed and it was cleated so it would not open up again. No new finish was added. Click here to bring the photo of the repair to the top.
This guitar has the original trapeze tailpiece. There is some wear to the finish, but surely that is to be expected. There is finish checking and there are some nicks and dings on the body of the guitar which is also to be expected. Click here to bring the close-up of the tailpiece to the top.
The neck, top and sides are in very nice shape. The original frets are all in place. They've been honed and recrowned. The action is low and the neck angle is just right.
Congratulations to the new owner!
